Today I wanted to give you an insight into what to expect at a Frances Stephenson newborn photography session.
If you’re organised, you will have booked the date for your baby’s newborn photoshoot with me well in advance. (Anytime from your 20 week scan is ideal). And we will have pencilled it into my diary a few days after their anticipated arrival.
But, of course, nobody told your baby that they are expected to turn up for their portrait session!
In fact, it’s highly likely that they may arrive either earlier or later than anticipated. Some babies can’t wait to get here, some are fashionably late. This makes my diary a wonderfully fluid place – I’m constantly juggling appointments in order to fit in all the lovely babies that I have the pleasure of photographing.
Booking your newborn photoshoot
When you first book your newborn photoshoot you will be required to pay £50 session fee to reserve your place in my diary.
It’s worth you knowing that I take a limited number of newborn sessions – a maximum of 6-8 each month – so that I can ensure I can fit everybody in. This also means I have the flexibility in my diary to work around midwife and health visitor appointments should you need to change your appointment once your baby is here.
Congratulations! Your baby has arrived!
Once your baby arrives, ideally within 48 hours, give me a call/email me/message me.
Together we can then confirm the best date and time for your session – which may well be different to the slot that we have pencilled in previously.
Your baby’s newborn photoshoot
Your baby’s portrait session will take place in my comfortable purpose designed studio. Or you can opt for a
Or you can opt for a newborn lifestyle session in the comfort of your own home.
What you need to know before your newborn photoshoot
Temperature of the studio
Newborn studios are not like traditional photography studios – they are designed to be warm and comfortable.
That’s because for most of the session your baby will be in their birthday suit! That’s so that I can capture your baby perfectly while they are still so brand new. Newborn clothes never fit correctly and we want to see all those beautiful details like the tiny fingers and toes, and curled up legs, that say ‘hey, I’m brand new!’
So be mindful of the fact that you will likely be warm during the photoshoot and plan your outfit for the day accordingly. I’d recommend wearing light layers.
Comforts of home
I want you and your baby to feel relaxed and comfortable all the while you are with me.
Feel free to feed on demand and put your feet up with refreshments and a magazine. I have even had some new parents take a quick nap during their baby’s session, which is perfectly ok with me!
My newborn photography sessions last between 2-4 hours so be prepared for this. I’d recommend you don’t make any other arrangements for the same day otherwise you risk tiring yourself and your baby out!
During the session, I will make use of beautiful wraps, hats etc. These are all specially-made products for newborn photographers. Fabrics are soft on their newborn skin and won’t irritate your baby.
Your baby is guaranteed to poop or pee on props, blankets, perhaps even me or you!
As a newborn photographer, I know that this is just par for the course. It’s something I’m used to dealing with on a daily basis, and something I allow for. So if (or more likely when) this happens during your session, please don’t be too alarmed or embarrassed!
All of my blankets and props are washed after each session and I have plenty of cloths, so please do not worry about anything.
